Confused about "holding space"?

Holding Space for Yourself This Festive Season

If you haven't watched the infamous Wicked interview, I'm sure you would have heard the term "holding space" making its rounds, lets break it down.

Holding space is simply about giving yourself permission to pause, reflect, and just be — and there’s no better time for it than during the festive season. Between the mince pies, family gatherings, and endless gift lists, it’s easy to forget about yourself. Let’s change that.

Here are some easy ways to hold space for yourself this Christmas without adding to the holiday stress.

1. Breathe. Seriously.

When was the last time you took a deep breath? Find a quiet spot (even if it’s the bathroom) and try this:

  • Inhale deeply through your nose for a count of four.

  • Hold for four, then exhale for six.

  • Repeat a few times, and feel your shoulders soften.

It’s simple, but it works.

2. Say No, Guilt-Free

In the words on the Wombats- "Sorry I'm late, I didn't want to come". Boundaries aren’t about being difficult; they’re about protecting your energy. Whether it’s skipping that third Christmas dinner or taking 30 minutes to sip your coffee in peace, you’re allowed to say no. You can’t pour from an empty cup.

3. Move How You Want

You want to keep moving your body over the festive period, do. You want to rest, rest. Move your body in the ways that feel good for you, but maybe, maybe that walk, or that 10 minute wiggle may actually make you feel pretty great.

4. Let Go of Perfection

Your tree doesn’t need to rival Pinterest, and your Christmas dinner doesn’t have to look like The Great British Bake Off. "Good enough" is good enough. Embrace the messy, imperfect joy of it all.

5. Create a Ritual Just for You

Light a candle, journal for five minutes, or take a quiet walk along the River Exe. A small, nourishing ritual can create calm amidst the chaos.

A Festive Reminder

Holding space for yourself isn’t selfish; it’s essential. When you look after your own well-being, you’re better able to show up for the people and moments that matter. This Christmas, give yourself the gift of presence—in every sense of the word.

Wishing you a peaceful, joy-filled festive season. If you’re in Exeter and fancy joining a yoga class after the festive period, you know where to find me. (Hint: Monday Rocket Yoga and Wednesday Vinyasa Flow are a good place to start!)

Merry Christams and a very happy New Year.
