A little bit about Yin

I've been teaching Yin yoga once a month and I may have come to a realisation last week that I just forgot to tell you how amazing this practice can be.

Let’s be honest—life can feel like one big to-do list sometimes, right? Between work, family, and all the little things in between, we can get caught in a whirlwind of doing. But what if we took a step back and let ourselves be for a change? Enter Yin Yoga—a practice that’s all about slowing down, getting quiet, and giving your body the chance to release tension and stress in a way that feels, well… really good.

I know, you might be thinking, “Slow down? In yoga?” But trust me, that’s exactly what Yin Yoga is all about. It’s the complete opposite of the fast-paced, flow-style classes you are used to practicing with me. If you’re ready to give it a try—or maybe you just want to understand why people swear by it—keep reading. I’m about to share why Yin Yoga is a game-changer when it comes to relaxation, flexibility, and emotional balance. Spoiler alert: it’s much more than just stretching.

What Exactly Is Yin Yoga?

If you’re new to Yin Yoga, think of it as a practice where you hold your poses for a long time. I’m talking anywhere from 2 to 5 minutes (or even longer!) in some cases. The focus isn’t on your muscles, but on the deeper connective tissues—things like your fascia, ligaments, and joints. These are the parts of the body that tend to get ignored in faster-paced practices, but they need love, too.

Yin Yoga is also inspired by Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which believes our body has a network of energy channels called meridians. When we hold poses for a while, we’re essentially opening up and clearing these energy channels—helping to release blockages and restore balance in the body.

The Big Benefits of Yin Yoga

1. It Makes You More Flexible—But Not in the Way You Think

Flexibility isn’t just about how far you can reach in a forward fold. It’s about how much freedom and mobility your body has, especially in the deeper tissues that we don’t always focus on. Yin Yoga is like giving your fascia and ligaments a chance to stretch and soften, without the usual rush. Over time, you’ll notice less tightness in those tricky spots—hips, lower back, hamstrings—and more freedom of movement.

2. Serious Stress Relief

Ever feel like your body is just stiff from stress? Not just your muscles, but a sense of constant tension that won’t let up? Yin Yoga is kind of like hitting the reset button for your nervous system. By holding poses for longer periods, you activate your parasympathetic nervous system—the part of you that helps you relax and recover.

What does this mean? Less fight-or-flight and more calm. I’m talking about deep relaxation that stretches beyond the physical. It’s like pressing pause on all that mental noise and allowing yourself a few precious moments of peace.

3. Improved Circulation and Energy Flow

Yin Yoga isn’t just about getting “bendy”—it’s also about promoting circulation and energy flow throughout your body. When you stay in a pose for a while, you encourage blood flow to places that are often neglected in faster-paced workouts.

4. Emotional Healing (Yes, Really)

This one might surprise you. Yin Yoga is as much about emotional release as it is about physical stretching. When you’re in a pose for several minutes, there’s a good chance you’ll start to notice your mind wandering—or maybe you’ll even start to feel some unexpected emotions. That’s totally normal!

The beauty of Yin is that it gives you the time and space to process whatever arises, whether it’s stress, frustration, or even joy.

5. Better Sleep (Who Doesn’t Need That?)

If you’re one of those people who struggles to wind down at the end of the day, Yin Yoga might be your new best friend. The deep relaxation you experience in class has a calming effect on the mind, which can help you fall asleep faster and enjoy more restorative rest.

If you’re looking for a pre-bedtime ritual that will help you unwind from the day and set you up for a peaceful night’s sleep, try adding Yin to your routine. Your body and mind will thank you for it.

How to Get Started with Yin Yoga

If you’re curious about giving Yin Yoga a try (and I highly recommend it!), here are a few tips to help you ease into the practice:

  • Use Props! Think of blocks, bolsters and blankets. They make long-held postures much more comfortable. Seriously, props are not cheating—they’re your support system.

  • Focus on Your Breath: The slower pace of Yin means you have more space to tune into your breath. Use this time to practice deep, calming breathing to help you relax even more.

  • No Need to Rush: Yin is about stillness. You don’t need to “achieve” anything. It’s all about being present in the moment and letting go of expectations.

  • Get Comfy: Loose fitting cozy clothes that allow you to move, Im talking sweat sets and comfy socks. Especially in these winter months you want to feel warm and free of restriction.

Final Thoughts: Slow Down, Let Go, and Feel Better

Yin Yoga might feel a little different than other styles of yoga you’ve tried—but that’s exactly why it’s so effective. In a world that encourages constant doing, it’s nice to have a space where you can simply be. To breathe, to stretch, to release tension, and to soften into stillness.

If you’re looking for a practice that nourishes you on every level—physically, mentally, and emotionally—Yin Yoga is a great place to start. So take a deep breath, roll out your mat, and allow yourself the space to slow down. Your body and mind will thank you for it.

I teach a Yin class once a month, so if this intro to Yin has got you craving a class please look out on your schedule and get yourself booked in for my December class.
